I de tekniske gymnasier (htx) er der fokus på udviklingen indenfor teknologi og naturvidenskab, samt de muligheder og problemstillinger de skaber. Teori og praksis kobles tæt i forskellige projektforløb med et anvendelsesorienteret perspektiv med det formål at bibringe eleverne en forståelsesramme og handlemuligheder til at skabe mening i og løse konkrete udfordringer i eget liv, i samfundslivet og i en global verden. Valgfaget og studieretningsfaget Idehistorie B, som bygger videre på det obligatoriske Teknologihistorie C, er et profilfag særegen for htx med vægt på teknologisk dannelse. Den tyske filosof Martin Heidegger skrev i 1954 at vores tilværelse er teknologisk. Menneskets væren i verden er teknologisk. Teknologi kan således ikke tænkes isoleret fra menneskets eksistens og levevilkår, normer, behov og identitet. Teknologi kan heller ikke tænkes løsrevet fra samfundet som helhed eller fra de videnskabelige, eller ingeniørmæssige og kulturelle kontekster hvori den er fremkommet. At kunne begribe teknologiens talrige sammenhænge og at kunne forholde sig til den på en reflekteret og kritisk måde er kernen i den teknologiske dannelse som Idehistorie B bidrager med i htx-uddannelsen.

Idéhistorie bidrager også til almendannelsen i mere klassisk forstand idet faget beskæftiger sig med udviklingen i menneskets måde at forholde sig til verden på, som den kommer til udtryk i ideer inden for filosofi, videnskab, politik, økonomi, religion, æstetik og teknologi. Faget ser idéerne i en historisk, social og kulturel sammenhæng fra oldtiden og frem til i dag som udgangspunkt for at reflektere over og tage stilling til tankestrømninger og teorier i samtiden og i et historisk perspektiv. Idéhistorie forbinder forskelligartede ideer og går i dialog med de øvrige fag for at behandle problemstillinger på tværs af faggrænser og videnskaber.

Almendannelsen og den teknologiske dannelse vil styrkes markant hvis Idehistorie B bliver et obligatorisk fag på de tekniske gymnasier.

Baggrund
Idehistorie blev indført i gymnasiet som det timeløse fag med den nye bekendtgørelse i skoleåret 1963-64 på baggrund af betænkningen Det nye gymnasium fra 1960. Med reformen i 2005 blev faget realiseret som et egentlig valgfag i htx-fagrækken.
